Hemostatic Gauze

What are the differences between hemostatic gauze and regular gauze?

Hemostatic gauze actively accelerates blood clotting using chemical agents, whereas regular gauze relies entirely on physical absorption and external pressure.

Hemostatic Gauze

Hemostatic Gauze

How it works: Impregnated with clot-accelerating substances like kaolin (a mineral clay) or chitosan (derived from shellfish).
Best used for: Severe, life-threatening arterial bleeding and deep junctional wounds (groin, armpit, neck) where a tourniquet cannot be applied.
Key advantage: Stops high-flow hemorrhages significantly faster than standard dressings.

Regular Gauze

How it works: Standard woven cotton or synthetic fabric that absorbs blood and creates a physical matrix for manual pressure.
Best used for: Minor cuts, abrasions, basic wound padding, or general wound packing when hemostatic agents are absent.
Key advantage: Inexpensive, widely available, and safe for general padding or delicate injuries.
Disadvantage: Cannot accelerate the body’s coagulation cascade on its own.

How long can hemostatic dressing stay on?

A hemostatic dressing should generally remain on a wound for no more than 24 hours before it is removed or evaluated by medical professionals.

Duration and Removal Guidelines

Temporary Control: Most emergency hemostatic gauzes (like Celox or QuikClot) are designed for temporary hemorrhage control during transport or tactical evacuation

Medical Removal: Surgical or trained medical staff must remove the packing in a controlled environment to clean the wound and prevent tissue damage.
Risks of Leaving It On: Leaving a dressing in a wound past 24 hours raises the risk of severe localized infection, tissue death (necrosis), or abscess formation.

Product Variations: While standard emergency protocols cap usage at 24 hours, certain specialized or specific brand products may have distinct clinical guidelines (some specific variants or damage-control packings are evaluated differently under advanced surgical supervision). Always check the specific product instructions or tactical medical guidelines
