An ostomy is a opening hole operated by a surgeon that allows stool, urine, or both, to leave your body through your abdomen.  The reason people need an ostomy varies, but usually occurs as a result from a malfunctioning urinary or digestive system. If your doctor communicates that you need an ostomy, it’s usually to save your life. Sometimes, ostomy surgeries are temporary and can be reversed, other times they are permanent solutions.

 

An ostomy bag is a collection system attached to a person to collect stool or urine. This bag is used after an ostomy surgery, which creates an opening—called a stoma, between the inside of the body to the outside.

There are several types of ostomy bags that can collect urine or stool. They can be broken down into two kinds:
• One-piece : It is made up of a bag and skin barrier adhesive integrated as a single unit. When the pouch is removed, the barrier also comes off. They are together.
• Two-piece : It consist of a bag and a separate adhesive barrier attached to the skin. This allows the pouch to be detached, emptied, cleaned, and reattached to the skin barrier.

An ileostomy is done when your small intestine is redirected through a stoma, typically on the right side of your abdomen.  This results in a need to discard output frequently, which will affect your preferences for types of bags.

A urostomy is done when your small intestines are redirected to divert urine from the ureters through the stoma.  This is done when the bladder is removed or needs to be bypassed for healing. A urostomy creates a stoma that’s usually located on the right side of the abdomen.

 

As for which is better for choice, one-piece or two-piece? It has to do with personal habits. For most ostomies, both one and two piece types can be used. In general, one piece is easier to use and cheaper. The two-piece stoma is cleaner and easier to observe.
If the stoma has edema, bleeding and other conditions, it is recommended to use a two-piece ostomy bag, which will be more convenient to observe the stoma situation and easy to clean.
