What is Lap sponge?

 

A lap sponge, often referred to as a laparotomy sponge, is a large, absorbent gauze product used primarily during surgical procedures. Typically measuring around 18 x 18 inches, these sponges are designed to absorb fluids and help maintain a clear surgical field. Made from non-woven or woven materials, lap sponges are often radiopaque, meaning they can be detected by X-ray, ensuring that none are accidentally left inside the patient after surgery.
